Audio Description Workshop for children
What happens when a film needs your voice? The Athens Children’s Film Festival and liminal invite children aged 10-12 to a special introductory workshop on audio description.
Across four sessions, children will discover audio description and how it can bring images to life through sound. They will create and record their own script, and have the opportunity to share the result with the Festival audience!

What is audio description?
Audio description is a fundamental tool that makes audiovisual experiences accessible to people with visual impairments. Through carefully curated audio commentary, the “invisible” information of an image is transformed into speech, allowing the viewer to fully experience the viewing experience.
An inclusive experience
Maria Thrasyvoulidi, audio description (AD) professional and member of liminal, and Eva Gkritzali, AD user with visual disability and member of liminal’s Quality Control Team (QCT), design and implement the workshop.
Together with the children, they will explore what it means to observe an image, which information we choose to describe, and how we can convey it through words. The workshop activities will provide a starting point for a conversation around accessibility, inclusion, and how we can create cultural experiences that reach more people.

What we’ll do in the workshop
The workshop consists of four meetings of two hours each, to be held during September-October. During these sessions the children will:
- learn and understand audio description principles,
- create their own descriptive scenario for a film from this year’s ATHICFF program,
- record their audio description in a professional recording studio.
And we don’t stop there! The film will be screened at the festival with the audio description created by the children themselves, who will take the stage to present their work to the audience.
