Unlocking Art

An Exploration of Art, Access and Visibility Through Play

A large sheet of recycled paper is spread out on the floor. Colourful markers have been used to write music-related words and draw musical notes and symbols across it. A young brunette woman leans over the paper, drawing a waveform with a red marker. Opposite her, a hand holds an uncapped orange marker, as if someone on the other side is also getting ready to add something to the paper.

Can art truly be open to everyone? Let’s find out… by playing!

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) and liminal invite you to a different kind of exploration game, where art meets accessibility, collaboration and imagination.

Workshop participants will team up with artists with and without disabilities, as well as accessibility and inclusive design professionals, to form exploration teams and take on a mission:

🎯 To unlock art for everyone.

❗ And there’s one rule: no one can do it alone.

What to expect

At each station, we encounter a different barrier that may prevent someone from taking part in an artistic experience. We identify it, explore it and look for a solution together. Through play, we discover what accessibility means and explore, in practice, how we can create spaces where everyone can participate.

Along the way, we unlock ideas such as inclusion, representation, equal participation and the visibility of disability in the arts.

And in the end… we put theory into practice!

✅ The game concludes with a hands-on artistic workshop, each time dedicated to a different art form: theatre, music or dance.

📍 Discovering that the keys to a more open and accessible arts scene aren’t hidden away in secret places. They’re right there in front of us, every time we remove barriers and create artistic spaces where everyone can be present, express themselves and participate on an equal basis.
