About The Matchmaker
The Matchmaker, by Pulitzer Prize-winning director Thornton Wilder, a delightful farce about the urgent need for human companionship and reconciliation with difficult reality, is directed by Thomas Moschopoulos with an eclectic group of collaborators and actors.
Dolly Levy is a woman of many talents, dynamic, but above all determined not to let life roll through her hands. As she is very adept at dealing with the personal affairs of those around her, she enthusiastically takes it upon herself to find the ideal wife for the wayward, stingy, but wealthy merchant Horace.
A journey to 19th century New York begins for the play’s heroes: Dolly, Horace, his two young employees and his niece who is withering in love after her uncle refuses to allow her to marry the painter she is in love with. The common goal of all the heroes on this journey is to break the vicious circle of loneliness.
Unexpected situations, masterfully directed by the brilliant four-eyed Dolly, set a farcical scene with a thunderous pace of comical situations but a very serious background, as the early version of the play, written in 1938 under the title The Merchant of Yonkers, echoes the Crash of 1929 and the “Great Depression” that followed. The characters, living in an uncertain world, have no time for unnecessary idealization. The pursuit of the absolute and the ideal is for them an unnecessary luxury. Determined to live as best they can, they enter the game of companionship with realistic expectations, seeking attainable happiness.
