Photographs, by Yorgos Lanthimos

A woman with long brown hair, blue eyes, and very fair skin is lying on her back in a bed with vintage sheets and pillows, wearing a white nightgown. It is Emma Stone. She is running her hands through her hair while gazing at the camera with a serene expression.

Onassis Stegi welcomes the renowned Greek filmmaker in a new light: as a photographer. Yorgos Lanthimos’s exhibition “Photographs” is on view at Onassis Stegi from March 7 to May 17, 2026, with liminal organizing accessible guided tours for people with sensory disabilities. Don’t miss the first-ever exhibition in Greece of the internationally acclaimed filmmaker and photographer.

Yorgos Lanthimos is celebrated for his world-building and absurdist explorations of human relationships, establishing him as one of the most distinctive auteurs in contemporary cinema.

The exhibition “Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs” in the -1 exhibition space at Onassis Stegi is a rare artistic event.

For the first time, Greek audiences will have the opportunity to experience four photographic bodies, comprising a total of 182 still photographs that Lanthimos created over the course of the past five years. These works offer new perspectives and insight into his perspective and artistic language, opening new avenues for a deeper understanding of this singular visionary.

In a black-and-white photograph, the head of a Greek shepherd dog with light-colored fur, darkening around the muzzle and ears, is captured. Its heavy, melancholic eyes gaze at the camera with a subtle hint of curiosity.

The show includes three photographic series born from the spaces of Lanthimos’ cinema, made on the fringes of film locations in New Orleans and Atlanta, and in the recreated cities built as sets on soundstages in Budapest (Poor things, Kinds of kindness και Bugonia).

The fourth body of work is the first showing anywhere of works from an ongoing body of personal photographs made in his native Greece, compiled during solitary walks around the edges of the city of Athens and on visits to islands in the Aegean Sea. Across all of Lanthimos’ photography is a contemplative engagement with the banal and the familiar.

A black-and-white long shot of a woman in a swimsuit walking along a ridge on the horizon. Closer to the camera, stones and soil under the open sky evoke a dry, insular landscape.

Photographs: entering the temple of photography

Designed in the form of a classical Greek temple, the show creates a central altar-like space which displays 110 new works by Lanthimos, while the outer perimeter presents three bodies of work linked to Lanthimos’ films, so audiences move from his known practice to the inner core of new photographic work.

The exhibition, commissioned and produced by Onassis Stegi, is curated by Michael Mack, one of the leading publishers and curators in contemporary photography, with pivotal collaborations in international photobooks and visual storytelling.

Taking photos has become an important thing in my life other than filmmaking, it is so much freer. It feels like there are fewer rules tied to conventional narrative.
