SAFEable’s participation in the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival Platform!

The 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival selected the documentary SAFEable – Accessibility and Inclusion in Information and Protection from Gender-Based Violence among 60 Greek feature-length and short documentaries to be screened on its Platform! Due to the overwhelming audience response, the documentary will continue to be available until Friday, March 17, 2023.

The image is divided into five frames of varying sizes. In the top left section, a woman's striking green eye stands out prominently. Directly below it, a young woman wearing a vermilion top stands against a bright pink background, gazing at the camera with a subtle smile. The top right frame features a sign language interpreter in a dark blue shirt, actively signing. At the bottom center, the documentary's title SAFEable appears in white lettering over a softly blurred background image. Completing the composition in the bottom right, another woman faces forward against the same vibrant pink backdrop. Together, these carefully arranged frames create a visually rich mosaic.

SAFEable, produced by liminal in collaboration with Diotima Centre and directed by Niovi Anazikou with the support of the Alliance for Gender Equality in Europe, was created as part of an awareness campaign on issues of gender-based violence and sensory disability. It is a fully accessible documentary featuring integrated sign language interpretation, subtitles for deaf and/or hard-of-hearing individuals, and audio description for people with visual impairments.

After a packed premiere screening at the Greek Film Archive in November, the documentary began its festival journey both in Greece and abroad. The 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival selected it to be part of this year’s program among 60 other compelling Greek documentaries.

As noted by the Festival organizers:

Acknowledging the challenges faced by Greek cinema professionals in their work, the Festival once again provides concrete support to Greek documentary filmmaking this year by paying screening fees to all Greek films participating in the program.

In a space with gray walls, six women and a sign language interpreter are seated around a veraman-colored wooden table, engaged in conversation.
