Workshops at the Music Library

For D/deaf and hard of hearing people

“Lillian Voudouri” Music Library of the Friends of Music Society and liminal invite you to three workshops, where we will get to know the Music Library, explore music through other senses, and learn about influential disabled and non-disabled figures who shaped the world of music.

Poster divided into two sections. In the top section, on the left against a light blue background, the word “WORKSHOPS” appears in white capital letters. On the right, against a white background, the information is displayed in black text: “April – May 2026, SYN-HYSIS. Getting to know music for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. In collaboration with liminal. ‘Lilian Voudouri’ Music Library of the Friends of Music Society at the Athens Concert Hall.” Logos of the partner organizations, The Europe Challenge, and the Europe Cultural Foundation are also shown. In the bottom section, there are two photos, one above the other. The first shows library shelves filled with books. The second shows the spacious MusiX LAB room, with wooden tables and chairs, bookshelves, colorful stools, and a wall-mounted piano in the background.

The three workshops are held within the project Resonance: Music appreciation for the D/deaf and hard of hearing, which is part of the European program “The Europe Challenge”.

#1 Getting to Know the Music Library: A Space for Knowledge and Creativity

Wednesday 1 April, 16:00 – 18:00

What exactly is a library?
How can I use the library in my daily life?

In this first workshop, we will explore the spaces, resources, and services of the “Lillian Voudouri” Music Library, enriching both our knowledge and skills. Participants will gain insight into the role and potential of a modern library, discovering what can be done within its walls, who can access it, and the range of services it offers to the public.

At the same time, they will discover what else the library spaces have to offer beyond books, as well as how the library staff can support its users.

At the end of the workshop, there will be a brief introduction to the library’s online catalogs, basic search techniques, as well as proper citation practices and bibliography creation.

#2 Music Differently: Seeing and Touching Sound

Tuesday 21 April, 16:00 – 19:00

What is music?
Is it only something we can hear, or could it be something more?

In the second workshop, we will explore various ways of experiencing and enjoying sound and music. Through discussion and interactive activities, participants will discover what music truly is, what it consists of, and the role it plays in our society.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with tools for visualizing sound and music, feel music through vibrations, and, of course… play music!

#3 Figures Who Shaped the World of Music

Friday 8 May, 15:00 – 19:00

Did you know that Christine Sun Kim transformed Deaf voices into music?
That Freddie Mercury paved the way for more liberated, androgynous, and queer expressions of gender on stage?
Or that Mikis Theodorakis insisted that we do not have the right to be unhappy?

In the third and final workshop, we will play an original board game designed with contributions from the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community as well as music professionals. Participants will discover figures—both disabled and non-disabled—who left their mark on the world of music. Each figure is introduced through a phrase-manifesto, helping us get to know them better and uncover aspects of music’s history and meaning.

These three workshops were designed based on the material gathered from three open discussions held in January and February at the MusiX LAB of the Friends of Music Society, with the participation of music professionals, D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and Greek Sign Language (GSL) interpreters.

The aim of these discussions was to explore access to and inclusion in musical information and resources from different perspectives. The contributions of the participants were instrumental in shaping the workshops, as co-creation—which lies at the heart of this project—is a necessary condition for meaningful inclusion.

The workshops are part of the European program “Europe Challenge”, an initiative of the European Cultural Foundation.
