What do you know about musical instruments?

Our collaboration with Megaron The Athens Concert Hall continues! The educational program “Discovering Musical Instruments” with the musicians of the Underground Youth Orchestra under the guidance of artistic director and conductor Kostas Iliadis, returns in October, renewed and accessible for children with sensory and/or neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Every musical instrument is a puzzle of technique and knowledge that sparks the curiosity of both young and old. Megaron The Athens Concert Hall invites us to the inclusive workshop “Discovering Musical Instruments” to explore the instruments of the symphony orchestra… up close! We can approach them, touch them, interrupt, ask questions, laugh out loud, understand, and applaud!

In collaboration with liminal, the educational workshop is once again made accessible to families with children aged 6 and above with sensory and/or neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Underground Youth Orchestra

In five colorful speech bubbles under the main title “Did you know…” we read:
1)The orchestra got its name from the basement of the house where it held its first rehearsals.
2)The Underground Youth Orchestra gave its first official performance in 2012 at the Andravida-Kyllini Summer Festival.
3)When it gave its first concert, the oldest member was only 13 years old.
4)Today, the orchestra has more than 90 members.
5)Most of its members play the violin.

The Underground Youth Orchestra, founded and artistically directed by Kostas Iliadis, is one of the most active and innovative youth symphony orchestras in Greece. Since 2010, it has offered young musicians the opportunity to train and develop by participating in high-level concerts and masterclasses in Greece and abroad, and has performed in over 150 concerts!

The Instruments of the Symphonic Orchestra

In each session, the young members of the orchestra introduce us to their favorite instruments under the guidance of conductor Kostas Iliadis. Through their own descriptions, we learn not only the history and origins of each instrument but also the personal connection each member has with their instrument, sparking children’s curiosity and nurturing a love for music in a very direct and engaging way.

Each session is dedicated to a different group of instruments—and each time, we discover something new. At the end of every session, the conductor and his orchestra have a very special surprise in store for us!

The program is adapted to accommodate families with children with disabilities.

n the process of expanding the inclusive approach in its educational programmes, the Athens Concert Hall in collaboration with liminal made the workshop “The Instruments of the Symphonic Orchestra: discovering musical instruments” accessible for children with low vision or blindness and children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Children with disabilities are encouraged to arrive 20 minutes before the start time of the workshop, in order to have a touch tour, meet the participants and get acquainted with the venue.

During the workshop, interpretation in Greek Sign Language is provided, and the music and sounds produced are visualized through waveform graphics for children with hearing disabilities.
