War Correspondents

Don’t miss War Correspondents on July 8, 2025, at the Athens Epidaurus Festival, featuring Accessibility Services for audiences with sensory disabilities provided by liminal.
What to Expect
War Correspondents: An Elegy on Loss, Violence and Memory
Directed by Christos Thanos, War Correspondents, draws inspiration from the growing number of armed conflicts worldwide and their devastating human cost, as well as from literary and historical texts that illuminate such moments of crisis. Like a Chorus, seven performers embody the shadowed voices of human history, moving through a constantly evolving set shaped by sound and physical expression. They narrate, sing, parody, defend, and ultimately reject humanity’s entanglement in war across the centuries — a visceral effort to understand human nature when pushed to its limits.
War Correspondents, in its simplicity and strength, is a powerful reminder that theatre endures as a space of resistance against forgetting — a living vessel of memory.

Our Approach to the Performance
liminal designed the Accessibility Services for this performance in close alignment with its artistic form and content.
For audiences with visual disabilities
The piece’s precise musical rhythm inspired us to create an immersive Touch Tour for blind and low-vision audience members. This tour offers the chance to explore the set, meet the performers, feel the costumes, and learn the key movement patterns the War Correspondents use during their storytelling.
Additionally, we remained true to the piece’s austere and intense style by combining narration and descriptions from the performers themselves with a specially created Audio Description script.
For audiences with hearing disabilities
Music and spoken word are central in War Correspondents. When creating surtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences, we closely followed the performance’s rhythm, making sure to leave space for both its humour and its more subtle emotional moments to come through.
Two Greek Sign Language interpreters will be on stage, occasionally signing simultaneously during scenes with overlapping dialogue or multiple voices. They conducted thorough research to ensure the terminology accurately conveys the meaning without compromising the emotional impact of the performance.
